I love to send cards to people. Yes, I am talking about folded pieces of paper that you put in an envelope and send via postal mail. I guess I'm old fashioned, but a birthday greeting on Facebook or an electronic Christmas card in my e-mail just doesn't have the same feel to me.
My friend Barbara had a rare form of cancer and received regular blood transfusions. For nearly 2 years, every time I donated a pint of blood, I sent a postcard saying that this pint of blood was donated in her honor. I sent 8 of those cards, and received a hand-written thank you for each except the last. Several of those thank you notes are hanging on my memory board in my bedroom - beautiful cards purchased on Barbara's travels to exotic places like Peru.
When friends in Saipan lost a beloved grandfather recently, I sent a bereavement card. It took me less than 5 minutes,and my friend was very touched. "I can't remember the last time that someone did that for me," she e-mailed. I could not be there in person to help them in their grief, but they knew I cared.
The important thing about the cards I send is that they keep me connected with the people that I care about. They demonstrate that I'm thinking about them and taking the time to show it.
Everyone has their own way to show that they care. For some, it's a conversation via skype or text message. For others, it may be a loaf of homemade banana bread or a handwritten thank you note.
It's not the piece of paper or the form of the communication that matters. It's about sharing, connecting, and supporting. Please take 5 minutes today to connect with someone you care about. It will be good for both of you.

The Help Your Keiki webpage (http://www.helpyourkeiki.com) is a website created by the State of Hawaii's Evidence-Based Services (EBS) Committee, in collaboration with the DOH, DOE, parent partners, and faculty from the University of Hawaii. This website is dedicated to parents or caregivers who don't know where to start when their child is experiencing emotional or behavioral difficulties. Unfortunately, there are very few "parent-friendly" resources that are data-driven, so the purpose of our website will be to promote the most effective evidence-based practices for youth with mental health needs, and help parents decipher which treatments are effective and credible.

Participants in this interactive session will gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to reach out to their elected officials to educate them about the important work they do in their communities. Learn strategies for establishing and maintaining relationships with both local and national elected officials, ways to present appealing program information and how to contact and set up appointments with these important partners.
