I just returned from the National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Conference where I presented a poster session titled, Involving Youth in Teen Pregnancy Prevention via Culturally Relevant Video Production. I also facilitated a roundtable session on fidelity and adaptation. It made me realize how much in the forefront Hawaii Youth Services Network and Hawaii’s youth-serving agencies are when it comes to making our programs and materials culturally relevant.
For us, thinking about cultural relevance for our youth is a natural and expected thing. We think it’s natural to eat sushi and pizza in the same meal. We don’t expect everyone to look like us, talk like us, or think like us.
Last year, we hosted a training of trainers on a positive youth development curriculum. The trainers showed a video made in Boston in which the producers had clearly tried to address the cultural diversity of their target audience. It included an Asian, a Hispanic, a Muslim, and an LGBT youth. And over half of the youth interviewed were black and a third were Caucasian.
In the discussion that followed, our participants immediately began discussing whether this video would work in Hawaii. It was a real “Aha” moment for the trainers. In all the trainings they had done on this curriculum across the United States, no group had ever raised this issue.

HAWAI’I BULLYING PREVENTION TOOLKIT
The Mental Health Association Hawai’I announced the launch of the Hawaii Bullying Prevention Toolkit to serve as a resource for parents, guardians, teachers, and students. LEGAL AID SOCIETY SELF-HELP VIDEOS AVAILABLE
The Legal Aid Society of Hawai`i has released a series of legal self-help videos, including topics on: Landlord-Tenant Basics, Eviction, Divorce, Adoption, Court Resources, and many more. A number of the videos are available in Marshallese, Chuukese, and Ilocano.

IUCN WORLD CONSERVATION CONGRESS STUDENTS’ DAY - HAWAI’I YOUTH CHALLENGE

CHILDREN'S GRIEF AND TRAUMA FACILITATORS AND MENTORS TRAINING
Kids Hurt Too Hawaii will hold a four day/two weekends training for volunteers to work as Children's Grief and Trauma Facilitators and Mentors. Training dates and times are:
Saturday, August 13 and 20 from 10 am to 5 pm;
Sunday, August 14 and 21 from 1 to 6 pm.
Cost: $125 for volunteers.

Big Sisters has embarked on their first Summer Food Service Program in the community of Hale Makana O Waiale on Maui. The Maui Food Bank chose Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui to host the program and it has been quite successful thus far.
The program itself ensures a hot, delicious, and nutritious meal prepared by Pizza in Paradise to youth between the ages of 5-18 years old at the Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Facility. Meals are being served every Monday through Wednesday with up to 25 meals being given to children, daily.
For the Hale Makana O Waiale Community the Summer Food Service is the first of its kind for residents.
