video "Protect Our Children"

In the video, Protect Our Children, survivors of commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) and their family members tell their stories of recruitment, betrayal, and recovery. One young woman talks about how she was recruited with the help of her best friend. Kay shares her experience of jumping out of a moving car when a customer tried to kill her on a dark and isolated road. A former pimp describes how he recruited and controlled “his girls.” And a mother speaks movingly about her daughter’s return home, “It was as if a light had gone out inside her.”

Parents, professionals, and, most importantly, the survivors of CSE explore the myths of commercial sexual exploitation and its realities. After viewing this video, no one will believe that sex work is a glamorous profession where you party all the time and make lots of money. Instead, viewers will understand:
  • That CSE is hard and dangerous work;
  • That pimps and other exploiters keep most of the money;
  • The tactics that recruiters use;
  • How young women and men are separated from familiar surroundings to make them easier to control and ensure that they have no friends or family to turn to for help; and,
  • What friends, parents, and community members can do if they suspect that a young person is involved in, or at risk of, commercial sexual exploitation.
