about the CSE project

In January 2002, nineteen organizations came together to discuss their concerns about commercial sexual exploitation of children. They formed a task force called Protect Our Children from Sexual Exploitation or POCSE. It included representatives from federal, state, and county government as well as non-profit organizations and concerned individuals.

POCSE members felt that it was important to increase public and professional awareness of the problem of CSE in Hawaii. They found that there were few materials available to educate people about this issue, and none that reflected Hawaii’s cultural and ethnic diversity. Hawaii Youth Services Network, a coalition of more than 45 youth-serving organizations statewide, agreed to take the lead role in developing an education project on commercial sexual exploitation. The result of this effort is the CSE Education Kit.

The Commercial Sexual Exploitation Education Kit (CSE Kit) is a set of videotaped and print materials on the subject of commercial sexual exploitation of children and youth.

The CSE Kit will help you educate people about the problem of commercial sexual exploitation including:
  • Types of commercial sexual exploitation (e.g., prostitution, stripping)
  • Why young people get involved in commercial sexual exploitation
  • How youth are recruited
  • Warning signs that may indicate that a youth is involved in CSE
  • What happens to young people when they get involved in CSE
It can be used in:
  • Schools
  • Youth programs
  • Churches
  • Parent education programs
  • Community groups
  • In-service or pre-service training for social workers, counselors, educators, youth workers, clergy, and law enforcement and legal professionals
The kit includes:
  • Two versions of the video, Protect Our Children
  • Short version—9 minutes long; most suitable for short presentations and younger audiences
  • Long version—20 minutes long; includes additional information needed by adult audiences
  • Discussion guides to prepare facilitators and speakers to use the videotapes and other materials with a variety of audiences including youth, parents/community members, and service providers
  • Reproducible handouts
    • Warning signs of CSE
    • Who’s at risk for commercial sexual exploitation
    • Definitions
    • Fast Cash
    • Resource guide (where to get help)
    • Bibliography of print and Internet resources
  • Fact sheets on related topics (e.g., sexually transmitted diseases)
